IMG_5132Performance, Screen Acting and Musical Theatre students at the University Of The West Of Scotland recently  had the good fortune to take part in an extended two day Screen Acting workshop with acting and voice coach  Mel Churcher.

Mel visited  UWS Ayr and held intensive coaching sessions in our new TV Studios on the 26th and 27th of February.

Mel can be seen here working with UWS students Debbie Lochran and Stephanie McBride.  Mel   is  is one of Britain’s foremost tutors of Screen Acting, and  also coaches a wide range of professionals from budding newcomers to top film stars like Daniel Craig, Angelina Jolie, Keira Knightley and Jet Li. She has coached presenters like Raymond Blanc and Goldie,  singers like Tricky and Joss Stone,  top corporate executives ,  lawyers and even  rugby union referees. She has worked recently on prestigious movie projects such as The Lady, The Door, Berberian Sound Studio, Sherlock Holmes, The Last Station and Control.

The students admitted that they were “blown away”  by the sessions. “It was brilliant to be taught by such an experienced tutor who has worked with all these top actors ” said one 4th year Contemporary Screen Acting student.. As can be seen from the photo, the use of  wide screen  HD  is  at the centre of Mel’s teaching method. UWS Actresses Anna Kennedy and Claudie Baker-Park are featured here,  captured on screen  by UWS’s Studio  supervisor, Jamie Hare , to give a truly professional touch as befits a Drama UK Recognised institution.

For her part, Mel was delighted   with her visit to the £81 million Ayr Campus. “It was my first time at UWS Ayr, but it won’t be the last.  I was very impressed by the Studio facilities and back up technical  staff  at UWS which in my opinion  are second to none in the country. The students were mature, open and very exciting to work with. These UWS undergraduates were  working   at a similar level to the Post-Graduate MA students with whom I work  at the Central School Of Drama.”IMG_5128

The event was organised by UWS Senior Lecturer Jane Robertson,  who studied under Mel at Central. Jane  was delighted at the response of the students and the success of the visit. ” At UWS we have the best facilities available, and to couple that with such distinguished visiting tutors as Mel means that we are able to offer a fantastic learning experience for our performance students. We are already planning the content of  Mel’s next visit”
